Shiny, Happy, and Bright! Chanel Rouge Allure #37 Insolente

I'm a pale pink, MLBB girl. Always have, and always will - or so, I thought.

However, on my recent trip to HK early this month where I walked, shopped (most of the time window-shopped,) and ate for four blissful days, I found myself gravitating towards bright pink lippies. Thanks to Chanel Insolente.

Prior to this, my first foyer into bright lips territory was Chanel Genial, a coral pink shade which pulled horribly reddish on me for reasons I could not, to this day, fathom. I bought it from the Rustans Makati counter, tried it on, and promptly sold it. I told myself never again, and pretty much stuck to my pale pink lipglosses and lipsticks when the occasions called for it.

I checked out Insolente just because a friend asked me to buy her a tube. Chinese SA at the Chanel DFS Galleria counter urged me to try it on. I grudgingly did so - prepared I would look like I kid who filched a tube from my mom's stash of red lippies (yes, my mom wears red, and only red - kabog!)

Imagine my surprise when I looked at my face in the mirror, and actually liked what I saw.

I did not buy it that moment though. Thought I would have to check it in daylight, and maybe it was just weird Chanel-shopping-induced adrenaline. The next day, while looking for another friend's YSL Rouge Pur Couture Rose DahliaI found myself checking the Chanel IFC counter and trying the Insolente tester again.

This time, there was just no denying it. I was in-love.

Chanel Insolente is a bright, happy, blue-based cool-toned pink. Opaque, a bit drying, but nothing a quick swipe of your reliable lip balm will not solve. It applies evenly, and I can imagine this will look quite princess-y on fair-skinned cool-toned girls. After eating, there's a bit of a stain left, but you definitely have to reapply.

In this photo, I was wearing Dior Rosy Glow blush (review to follow) and a freshly applied Chanel Insolente. Oh, and please excuse the constipated look and the geek glasses.

I recommend this to all cool-toned fair girls. Warm-toned girls, maybe Rose Dahlia (review to follow) is the one for you.

Human Nature Sunflower Cleansing Oil

Confession: I am actually kuripot.

I am so stingy that eventhough I have long wanted to try the famous Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil and DHC Cleansing Oil, I never succumbed to the lemming. I find them very expensive, and I thought didn't need them since I hardly wore makeup anyway.

But I don't have any problem buying those pretty baked blushes which cost an arm, a leg, and a belly button, which I hardly use too. Go figure.

One lazy Sunday morning, I was killing time at the Legazpi Sunday Market and I chanced upon the Human Heart Nature stall. I have long wanted to try their products, after hearing nurses rave about their Citronella Bug Spray. That actually was a classic funny moment. I thought they were raving about a "bag spray," and I was like, ""what's a bag spray, and why would anyone need a spray for her bag?!:

Turned out that was me being bingengot.

So I came home from the sunday market with the much raved beauty elixir Sunflower Beauty Oil (yes, it deserves the adulation, but that's for another post) and its fragrant somewhat diluted (although the bottle doesn't say so) version, the Sunflower Cleansing Oil. I figured for P350/200mL bottle of the cleansing oil, how can I go wrong? I decided against buying the Love Minerals Pressed Powder foundation - which I bought online a couple of days after because I have no self-control - and the Love Minerals Petal Bloom blush, which, again, I bought online since it came as a bundle pack with the powder foundation.

I tried it right there and then - me really likey! ♥

It's very easy to use - just pump, slap on, massage, and wipe off! For heavier makeup, repeat. :) At this point, you can go on and use your favorite facial wash (right now I am using Mary Kay Time Wise 3-in-1 cleanser) and continue your night routine (toner-serum-moisturizer-etc) or if you're like me who's a sleepyhead, doze off.

Yays

★ organic
★ removes liquid foundation and blush easily
★ P350/200ml bottle which is a steal
★ economical - my bottle is almost three months, and I still have a third left - I don't need a lot because I don't wear thick makeup
★ light, smooth texture
★ it comes with a pump, so t's hygienic, and does not waste product
★ moisturizing too - I oftentimes go home dead-tired, I just slap this on my face, wipe off, then slap another palmful and doze off. I always wake up with fresh, glowing face!
★ so easy to use - again, just slap, massage, and wipe off!
★ no thick, heavy lola-esque so bloody greasy cream feeling I get when I use my mom's Pond's Cold Cream.

Nays

★ hard to find, although I heard HHN will be available at Beauty Bar soon (I saw some HHN products at Rustans Makati a few days ago)
★ the scent is not so overpowering, but I'd prefer if it were fragrance-free
★ does not remove waterproof eyeliner and mascara - this is where good old Olive Oil comes in (thank you, Michelle Phan!)
★ does not emulsify, which is fine with me, but those used to Shu might miss that integral part of the cleansing process :P

Will I buy again? No, but that's just because I have a back-up. :)

Lewis and Pearl Oil Control Powder in Rain

I don't know why I even bother buying makeup. Most days, I'm out wearing Lewis and Pearl.

I discovered it one lunch break. I was looking for alternative to the Ponds Oil Control loose powder in blue - which was long discontinued. It used to be my HG loose powder - it was with me during my ups and downs. Throughout medical school. Through falling in love, through heartbreaks. Even when I went to the US for an extended hiatus, I made sure I bought tubs and tubs.

Heck, it used to be the only content of my kikay kit. I loved how it perfectly complemented my skin, controlling the oilies, giving me fresh complexion all the time. Of course, I had to reapply maybe every 4-5 hours, but for something that cost <20 pesos, it sure was a winner. But then Ponds decided to discontinue it. I found the pink version in Thailand (they didn't have the blue version - the major reason I went!), which of course hoarded. My friend saw me buy 10 tubs, and said it seemed I bought my powder for ten years! But sadly, it just wasn't the same. I ended up giving them to friends. Shame on you, Unilever, for breaking my heart. So yeah, enter Lewis and Pearl.

While it doesn't have the super brightening effect of Pond's blue, Lewis and Pearl Oil Control Powder (I use the Rain variant) keeps my oilies at bay, while giving me fresh, radiant (well okay, not as radiant, but I have to move on right?) complexion all day long. I have not used it under foundation or tinted moisturizers, so I can't vouch for its non-cakiness, but under regular moisturizer/sunblock, it's pure love for me. Johnson's baby powder works just fine, but not as lasting. And when I pour too much, it makes me sneeze.

I love it so much I kept it to myself for a long time, thinking if I tell people, I'd have a hard time finding it. :D But I'm letting you in on the secret this time - I mean, I wouldn't want it discontinued like my beloved Ponds, right?

Yays:

★ very affordable at P18.75 (which is why I have back-ups for my back-up! :D)
★ really truly does work - for at least four hours, my face is shine-free!
★ ultra light on the face
★ no need for fancy brushes, just pat pat and I'm good to go
★ no need for mirror either! It really just blends well with my skin tone no matter how much I use (morena ladies, beware though - a nurse used this, and complained because she said it made her face kabuki-like)

Nays:

★ Honestly can think of none!

So screw Kryolan, Shiseido, Shu Uemura, MAC, screw all of you fancy powders. There's only one loose powder for me, and that's you, Lewis and Pearl Oil Control Powder in Rain.

I love you.

And you too, Green Cross. Please don't go breaking my heart like Unilever did.

Nope.

Do you use eye cream?
No, but I use HHN Sunflower Beauty Oil around my eyes. Very impressive.

Do you or did you have acne prone skin?
No. I'm lucky enough to have non-acne prone skin.

Did you ever have to use Pro-activ?
No.

MAKE UP

What foundation do you use?
I rarely use foundation. But my favorite would be Shu Uemura Face Architect smoothing fluid in 974. Also the discontinued Shiseido Supplist powder foundation.

How about concealer?
I use Mary Kay concealer in Ivory for the undereye area. I think it's a dupe for Benefit's Lemon Aid.

Do you know your undertone color?
Yellow.

What do you think of fake eyelashes?
I wanna try!

Did you know that you are suppose to change your mascara every 3 months?
Yes. But I don't follow it hehe!

What brand of mascara do you use?
Always Maybelline or Avon Super Shock.

Sephora or MAC?
Sephora, hands down.

Do you have a MAC Pro-card?
None.

What makeup tools do you use in make up application?
Fingers for liquid foundation. Blush brush for blushes. Flat top for powder.

No.

I find liquid easier to line eyes with.

Two years ago, I was a J&J girl.

I rarely spent for cosmetics, never ever wore them. I would go out with my face freshly slathered with VMV Armada SPF80 - I always woke up late, most of the time couldn't wait 30 minutes for the sunscreen to be absorbed. At the clinic, I'd powder my face using my ever-reliable Johnsons baby powder, and promptly start my work day.

Fast forward 2011, and now I face the world with Lewis and Pearl. :D

Kidding aside, while it's true I almost always go out with just a dusting of Lewis and Pearl Oil Control powder in Rain (yes, the blue one costing less than P20), the past two years have been insane. At least, my bank account says so. A trip to The Body Shop one boring afternoon back in 2009 changed my wallet's future forever.

I remember it was TBS Autumn 2009 line - specifically that bright, bright, pretty Cool Dusk blush that captured my heart. Hook, line, sinker.

And there was no turning back.

And oh, there was also, you know, that very uhm, influential forum (bad influence!), Girltalk.
If you want to afford to send your kids to college someday, I suggest you stay away.

Two years, a lot of Stila, some Shiseido, MAC and Shu Uemura and few Chanels later (most of which, by the way, are still safely inside their boxes at The Altar - I have this quirk, I like looking at my makeup, but don't bother using them), I'm here.

I'm finally blogging. About cosmetics, that is. Although many, many years ago I blogged extensively about my life, school, my friends, about everything. Until I went to medical clerkship and didn't have the time to even comb my hair.

But I digress.

I'll start with the contents of The Altar.
